``The First Amongst the Finest``

The early initiates of Phi Beta Sigma at Howard University remained deeply connected to the Washington, DC area after graduation, continuing their dedication to the founding Alpha Chapter. These brothers played a crucial advisory role, offering networking and guidance for on- and off-campus activities. However, the outbreak of World War I, which disproportionately impacted African American men, temporarily slowed the fraternity’s growth. Yet in 1919, as brothers returned from the war, Founder A. Langston Taylor reconnected with them to reestablish a strong fraternity presence in Washington, DC, particularly following the reorganization of the General Board. This led to the creation of the Washington DC Alumni Chapter, later known as Alpha Sigma Chapter.

As the fraternity’s first alumni chapter, Alpha Sigma, founded in 1919, is steeped in tradition and purpose. The chapter’s founding members were committed to aligning with the national organization’s values, ensuring that community involvement became, and remains, a cornerstone of their mission.

Proudly known as “The First Amongst the Finest,” Alpha Sigma has upheld its legacy of leadership, excellence, and service for over a century. Its members continue to advance the fraternity’s mission both locally and globally, reflecting the diversity and growing multiculturalism that defines Phi Beta Sigma today.

The Alpha Sigma chapter proudly serves as the alumni advisory chapter for the Gamma Lambda undergraduate chapter, based at the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, DC. Gamma Lambda was chartered in 1951.
